Snickers is a chocolate bar made by Mars, Incorporated.
Snickers holds the top spot for the bestselling chocolate bar in the world. It has annual global sales of $3.5 billion.
Frank Mars was the creator of the Snickers candy bar and founder of Mars, Inc., originally called Mar-O-Bar Co. It was named after one of Frank Mars’ favorite horses.
The Snickers candy bar was the second candy bar sold by Mars, Inc.. The first was the Milky Way, which was originally thought up by Frank Mars’ son, Forrest Mars, who had the idea of trying to create a candy that was to be “chocolate Malted Milk in a candy bar”.
The idea for the Snickers bar came from an already existing snack that was made up of nougat, peanut, and caramel. Frank Mars added chocolate, put it in candy bar form, and started selling it wholesale.
When Snickers was first released, there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding its price. At a time when candy bars cost 5 cents, the Snickers bar was sold for a whopping 20 cents.
The bar was marketed under the name “Marathon” in the UK and Ireland until 1990, when Mars decided to align the UK product with the global Snickers name (Mars had marketed and discontinued an unrelated bar named Marathon in the United States during the 1970s which was similar to the UK’s Curly Wurly).
There are also several other Snickers products such as Snickers mini, dark chocolate, ice cream bars, Snickers with almonds, Snickers with hazelnuts, Snickers with pecans, Snickers peanut butter bars, Snickers protein and Snickers with Extra Caramel, as well as espresso, fiery, and sweet & salty versions.
According to Mars, a normal Snickers bar contains 280 calories.
Each Snickers bar contains roughly 16 peanuts.
About 100 tons of peanuts go into making about 15 million Snickers bars each day.
On 16 January 2020, Mars Wrigley unveiled a massive Snickers bar at the company’s Waco, Texas plant. Equivalent to more than 41,000 single-sized Snickers bars, the record-breaking chocolate nut bar features the same classic ingredients as normal Snickers — but on a much larger scale — including more than 1,200 pounds (about 550 kilograms) of caramel, peanuts and nougat combined and nearly 3,500 pounds (about 1,600 kilograms) of chocolate.
Snickers salad is a mix of Snickers bars, Granny Smith apples, whipped cream and often pudding or whipped topping served in a bowl. It is a potluck and party staple in Iowa, where the “salad” is popular alongside glorified rice, Watergate salad, jello salad and hotdish.
Snickers pie is a chocolate dessert made with five Snickers bars, mascarpone and soft cheese. The recipe appeared on the BBC cookery show Saturday Kitchen, where it was made by Antony Worrall Thompson.
Deep fried chocolate bars (including Snickers and Mars bars) became a specialty in fish and chips shops in Scotland in 1995, and in the early 2000s, became popular at American state fairs.
